Conventions of Music Video

Movement
The movement within the video corresponds with the music and sets the pacing of the song itself. The movement does not simply cover the dance moves but also the often fast editing and camera movement. 
It often sets the tone of the music video with slow close ups being typical of R&B and fast dance based camera moments that focus on the dance itself is typical of dance music.

Narrative
The story line of the music video often relates to the lyrics or maybe retelling the story of an upcoming film using clips. In some cases however, the narrative is independent from the music video and is more abstract to demonstrate a theme. The often present artist's individual personalities or personal struggles. 

Star Image
This aspect often relates to the narrative and covers how the artist is perceived in the video. For example, there was a negative response to Miley Cyrus' change in star image over the past few years as she has branched out into risqué pop performances from typically country music.

Technical Effects
Technical effects such as CGI and animation are often used in music videos for example: David Hasselhoff's Hooked on a Feeling cover. Bands such as The Gorillaz where the members are anonymous and/or fictional, use animation on both music videos and at live events to represent their characters. Alternatively, lighting is seen as a form of technical effects and are often used to hide imperfections with the artist on screen so to portray them in the best possible light.
